A Place of Execution

Excellent, award-winning mystery (I tend to try to foist this one off on just about everyone!). In late '60's small-town Britain, a child disappears, with evidence indicating that she's been murdered; police do make an arrest & the perpetrator receives the death penalty. It's an excellent procedural, and captures the atmosphere not only of place but also of emotion, with everyone surprised by such a crime perpetrated against a child. Then comes Part Two: present-day, a young investigative reporter is working on a book about this case. Suddenly, the now-retired policeman who'd been helping calls to say that he won't help any longer, and that the reporter cannot use anything that he has said...
Sent to rainbowbabe on 10/14/03 in return for an Anne Perry mystery ...
Just got this in the mail - I am looking forward to reading it! I have never heard of this author, so it's great to be introduced - especially as the description of the plot sounds quite intriguing.
Thanks, KML!

Wow! This is one of those books that you shouldn't read when you have other major stuff going on - like a batch of papers you *should* be grading! I put everything on hold so I could finish the last thirty pages of A Place of Execution; I refused to put it down until I found out about certain things...
Funny - I had put off reading this book for a bit, because I have a teenaged daughter, and I wasn't sure I wanted to read a "deliciously gruesome serial killer thriller" (a NY Times quote on the cover). However, I think some of the other quotes describe the book more accurately: "An extraordinary story told with extraordinary skill"..."surprising and completely satisfying"..."absorbing...riveting..." Etc!
Thanks for sending this to me KML! I understand your enthusiasm for it!
I may pass it on to my sister... She loves a good mystery!
