This novel by Beth Powning, Canadian author, was wonderful to read and very moving. The characters emerged with a sense of realism, fragility and inner strength - - I will remember Azuba and Carrie, and the journey they took me on, for a long time. A real tribute to the wives of sea captains who travelled with their families in the mid-1800's.

Overall, I did not really like this book. Sailing around the world in the 1860's is not very appealing to me, and I did not understand many of the nautical terms. There is a glossary at the back, but it did not include everything I wanted to know. Having said that, the book is well written, and does offer great insight into life during that time period, especially aboard a sailing ship. There was much hardship and sadness during the voyages, which probably affected my opinion of the book, but at the same time those events significantly shaped the characters, especially Azuba.
