Major Pettigrew's Last Stand: A Novel
3 journalers for this copy...
Picked this up at my first even visit to Litchfield Books. What a great independent bookstore in Pawley's Island. It's been on my wishlist and I got it thinking I'll send it on to hazrabai if she hasn't read it yet.
I found myself falling into Major Pettigrew's world quite easily. This is a gentle and heartwarming book, with Major Pettigrew as a very likable main character, who grows out of his stuffiness into a true hero. Mrs Ali is marvelous, and all the other characters, likable or not, are wonderfully drawn. Even in their obstinance or arrogance or ignorance, they make a true-to-life circle around Major Pettigrew.
The themes of the book are both simple and complex. As Shakespeare said, "the course of true love never did run smooth" and that seems to apply here, whether it is a romance or the love of a father for his son. (And while some of the characters made me shake my head at times, only Roger made me want to smack him -- the others seemed to have Pettigrew's best interests, to their POV, in mind, while Roger was only interested in Roger.
Though the story is quite different, the tone and feelings evoked remind me of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.
