José Saramago was a Nobel laureate, Portuguese novelist.
Saramago's experimental style often features long sentences, at times more than a page long. Periods are used rarely and uses very particular techniques when refering to his characters and to start a new speaker's clause.
This book is seen as the most famous of his works. It is a love story set in the 18th century with the construction of the Convent of Mafra.

This book was released on the exact day of the author's sad death.
It was handed to one very nice and happy looking German tourist at one of my favourite places in the world - Tejo flowing below and a breathtaking view of Lisbon in front of you... just imagine!
