Young dragon master Jakkin and his beloved Akki are on the run from government forces. In a forbidding mountain of wilderness, they stumble upon a network of caves, and think they've at last found a refuge. But within the mountains is something bloodier than anything Jakkin and Akki have ever imagined, something so monstrous that the only thing they can do is battle it with everything they have - even if they have to die fighting.
The glow seemed to come from a pile of sticks stacked up so high, the top reached the cave ceiling.
"That's bone," Jakkin said.
Akki looked more closely, horrified. "You're right," she said. "Femur, fibula, humerus . . ." She went up and down the stack, touching the bones and naming them, until she added unnecessariy, "Dragon bones."
Despite the cold, Jakkin felt a fine film of sweat on his palms. "What . . . " he began, his voice cracking, "What can be big enough to eat this many dragons?"
