Unabridged reading by Humphrey Bower
Blackstone Audiobooks 2006, 3 MP3-CDs

There is a Wikipedia article about the book and a
Shantaram website which I found interesting.

A fascinating book and simply wonderfully read. One of the very best audiobooks I've listened to so far. And because I enjoyed it so much I want to share it and send it along as an audiobook ring.

The participants are:
1) RikkiDD
2) Pitak
3) Qantaqa
4) tiger-kuh-katze
and then back home to toshokanin

India is at my home, looking forward to hear it for the next months.

I can only confirm the opinion of toshokanin - the plot is fascinating and Bower is the perfect reader for it.
What I liked most were the different charakters. As in real live, no one is only good or evil, even Shantaram - a convicted criminal - has his admirable qualities and it is surprising how "easily" he comes in contact with criminals.
Not only the charakters are great, there are many interesting facts about mentalities and live in India, its villages, cities and slams.
Thanks for joining this audiobook.

Finished. Well. A very versatile book.

In the beginning it was so exciting it didn't want to turn it off, but at the same time I often had a feeling of hearing deeply romantcized kitsch about those poor, but good people... the poorer the better. Crimes are solely comitted by policemen and politicians.

The longer you listen, the more complex and realistic the characters appear to be, but somehow Lin still repelled me due to his Mr-Knows-it-all-does-it-all-can-manage-it-all-behaviour. One moment he tells us how great the indian people are, the next he as a foreigner needs to manage everything those indians couldn't do. That changes after Prabaker's death, though, but now that I started to like Lin, the story is getting worse, even boring in the end. I didn't like the side trip to Afghanistan at all, and after that, I just listened to it - to listen to it. Come to an end with it.

Nevertheless, most parts of the book were great, and the narrator was perfect.
I will give this audiobook to Stephan next time I see him, he will like ist.
