See Evil
Journalist Joe Oakes makes a living exposing supernatural hoaxes. But what he sees when he visits a secretive religious community on a remote Scottish island forces him to question everything he thought he knew.
In "Pig Island", Mo Hayder dares you to face your fears head on and to look at what lurks beneath the surface of everyday normality. It's about the unspeakable things people do to each other.

I discovered Mo Hayder about a year ago & thoroughly enjoy her Jack Caffery series (Birdman, Treatment & Ritual) - well written crime stories in which the boundaries can blur between the good & bad, shocking...& disturbing...in parts but damn good reads! So I was expecting the same from Pig Island.
Once again Hayder writes the story mainly from the male perspective but this time with the narration switching between Oaksey & his wife Lex:
From Oaksey we learn of Malachi Dove, Pig Island & discover the truth about the mysterious creature that lurks on Pig Island's shore....
From Lex, we find that she has problems of her own...& unbeknown to her husband, she's also making plans.
For me, it wasn't the terrifying read that the cover blurb suggested, I found it more disturbing than terrifying, & while it's certainly a good tale, it made for uncomfortable reading in parts....however, it did have an ending I never saw coming!
I'd like to know what others make of this, so it will probably go into a bookbox at some point. Watch this space....
Read as part of the 2011 ULTIMATE CHALLENGE (#2) -themed "CREATURE" read for January
Oh, & I did learn a new word -"Dysmorphophilia", though I can't see me using it in day-to-day conversation! (if you haven't read the book you'll have to get your dictionary out lol!)

Hmmm. Doesn't have the grip that Birdman has, but I still read well into the early hours to finish it. Slightly disappointing, I thought: there was a lot of potential for the sect living on the island, which could have been exploited in great depth - especially as they'd had such a build up.
Unlike Plum_crazy, I did suspect quite early on how the book would end, and was disappointed when I was proved right.
There's a lot going on in this story, if not a tad too much, and so a few details have remained unexplained, while others are skimmed over.
Still worth reading, but not up to the standard of her other stuff.
