the spirit catches you and you fall down

This was recommended by a friend of my father's who knew I was into cultural studies. This is a very touching and thought-provoking work of cultural anthropology, and is very accessible. Fadiman contrasts American medical culture to Hmong culture in a very equi-vocal and balanced way. American modern conventions are as eerie and mysterious to the girl's Hmong parents as chicken sacrifice is to the girl's doctors. Really fascinating, a fast, easy and compelling read. I hope it finds a good home with you, book-catcher.
An eye opener!
