Picked this up at the tip shop. Just *had* to get it, given the names of the people involved!

Heh. Kept on meaning to send this to sparky-redhead's OBCZ at Eliots Fairgrounds Coffeeshop in Norfolk, but somehow kept on putting it off!

Wow! I'm over the moon!

Just a few minutes ago, Pam the mail carrier rang my doorbell.

"This one won't fit in the mailbox", she said. "Have we gotten one from Australia before?" Then she handed me a parcel.

Now let me explain about Pam, my mail carrier. Despite the extra load all my RABCKS, rings, rays, trades and other BookCrossing frolic add to her daily load, she LOVES BookCrossing. (Did I mention she is a very sensible lady?)

I have this fantasy that she has a map on her wall and places pins in all the origin location of the packages she brings to our home. But, I digress.

My brother from California, who just arrived here a few hours ago returning with Bumma from a trip to Florida (boy was that confusing to write!), heard my chortle of delight.
"Valentines present?"m, he asked?.

"Better! Bookcrossing!", I said, with a huge grin on my face.

The parcel was a care package from my friend Skyring, complete with this book, this one and two, count 'em TWO packages of the legendary Tim Tams. Who would have thought my grin could get any wider?

Thank you Pete, and thank you Sparky-redhead for having parents with the good sense to name you the same name my parents chose for me. I'm often more of a scullery maid than Princess, but I shall enjoy the book the same...and enjoy the chance to show off a bit of my beloved Charleston, to boot.

The big question is...do I have to share the Tim Tams?

Pictured: One of our house zwergs welcoming the newcomers to this hemisphere (again for the Tim Tams, so I am told!)

Hello Boys and Girls!

Do you know what time it is???

It's time to play Follow THAT Book!!!!

Once again, we shall tag along in absolute astonishment as bookczuk makes a fool of herself, but shows off her lovely town.

Are you ready?

We'll start off with a photo of your hostess being mobbed by the children at the pre school class at Mitchell Elementary, after she had read them a story...possibly Where the Wild Things Are which was the 500th book registered on her bookshelf. That particular copy was left with the class teacher Hollingsbower (who has yet to journal it! Grrrr)

edited to add- I can't find the mob picture, but it is in the book journal. This is another, more civilized one taken that same day.

Sooo....today being a Saturday, in the months of January-March, means one thing...Boyczuk has Ball Crew practice. In the old days, it would have been Ball Boy, but tennis is now a politically correct sport. Bah.

Amyhow, the FAmily Circle Cup is played here every year at the FAmily Circle Stadium and Tennis Center. (How originally named, eh?) Boyczuk is now a ball crew veteran and does more in training the newbies than in being trained himself.

Here's a map so you can see where we headed. James Island is that big land mass to the west of Charleston (unlabled, of course- the one with no writing on it...)

Journal Entry 6 by wingbookczukwing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA on Saturday, February 19, 2005
OK- so we had enough of bridges and rivers in the journal for the other book in the care package. We'll move on toother stuff.

Here's the club house at Daniel Island. The tennis players basically hang out here when not on the courts during the tournament. Off limits to all us peons- unless we have the good fortune to be a volunteer who does driving for the Cup.

(The other book with the Amys is Kavalier and Clay- a visiting bookring)

And the token ladies locker room picture for newk. He liked the last one. I told you not to tell him!

These little girls were having a grand time playing and were a lot more fun to photograph than the fancy shower and fixtures.

Journal Entry 8 by wingbookczukwing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA on Saturday, February 19, 2005
Susan is the head of the ball crew. She played professionally, years ago, and despite pretty big health problems, still runs the crew. In the past, I've done a bit of volunteering....I've done ushering and ball crew stuff (not out on the court, but helping to manage all those unruly children who make up the crew. I am the unofficial ball crew nurse, and one of the folks who helps Susan out. She is amazing with her organization and a really nice person to boot.)

Journal Entry 9 by wingbookczukwing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA on Saturday, February 19, 2005
So...in the shadow of the stadium, the kids practive...they are on the far cort- the barely visible huddled masses. I'll get closer in a moment, but liked having the stadium in the background. There are about 15 courts used in the tournament- but only stadium court and the one by the club house ever appear on TV.

Journal Entry 10 by wingbookczukwing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA on Saturday, February 19, 2005
They do drills and run, and learn how to pass the ball properly to the players, and all kind of useful skills. I don't so that stuff, because despite being a member of the crew, in the four years I've been doing this, I don't go on court. I may be mother hen to a crew (1112 kids that rotate in and out according to a plan) for a given match, or a monitor or a go-fer or patch a skinned knee or applu ice to bruised body parts (those servees can be fast and if you get pegged it HURTS!

So, today, I took a little detour over to stadium court. This is the front entrance- where you would come as a paying guest.

Journal Entry 11 by wingbookczukwing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA on Saturday, February 19, 2005
Being on the ball crew, however, I know where the tunnel is that the players and on court volunteers and staff use to get onto stadium court. So...in the books went and took their bow at the net!

This little scooter just was such a great color- BookCrossing Yellow!

Journal Entry 14 by wingbookczukwing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA on Saturday, February 19, 2005
Boyczuk turned a peculiar shade of pasty white and green when I pulled ou the camera while entering the highway to get an overhead view of the stadium. He is not a fan of my digital driving that I am working to perfect. So, I had to upload this picture from the colf course website to give the overview. (and don't tell newk that there's another nice golf course here...Kiawah, Wild Dunes, Hilton HEad and now Daniel Island)

WEll now...where does one go to have fun with a book? Why Folly Beach, of course! The edge of America. A funky, ecclectic sea island one over (and hence has a beach, even if the Atlantic Ocean is trying hard to reclaim it. WE've lost at least 2 block in my lifetime, and probably about 5-6 in the life time of the generation one older than mine. The house that Gershwin wrote Porgy and Bess is now just a spot on the floor of the ocean...now that's a harsh critic!

From my house you can reach the beach several ways- it's about a 10 minute drive or a 300 year bike ride if your name is bookczuk. Consequently, I usually drive there and walk, or throw the bike on the car and drive to the idland and then bike. Today my front tire was flat, and there was no one to pump it up for me- not that I can't but the tires are latex (natural rubber) to which I am deathly allergic, so Mr czuk does my bicycle maintenance for me. He was out when I discovered the dilemma...I did eye our alternate forms of transportation (pictured), but all in all, opted for car and my own two feet at the beach.

Hurricanes tend to wreak havoc on sea islands and coastal areas, and the Chalreston Low Country is no exception. S2ptember 21 1989 (boyczuk was 4 months old) Hurricane Hugo rushed ashore here and the world was suddenly turned upside down. This boat washed up on the narrow road leading to Folly Island and was never reclaimed by the owners (who could have lived miles away, for all that is known). Over the years, it has become a great sport to paint messages to someone on it. On popular days, such as Valentine's Day, the message may change 10 or 12 times in the day. Usually, what is painted lasts no more than a day or so.

Stopped by my favorite fish place, Crosby's, where they understand the meaning of wild and fresh!

Journal Entry 18 by wingbookczukwing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA on Sunday, February 20, 2005
I'm used to humans looking at me oddly when I leve a book and take a picture, but pelicans???? These fellows were very tolerant, though I am sure they wished I had fish heads or something to give them. Stupid me, I have the books facing the wrong way on the post. Sorry.

Journal Entry 21 by wingbookczukwing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA on Sunday, February 20, 2005
And finally, on Folly...it's a small island- lost of beach and river views. Only about 4 blocks of it don't front on some type of water. This sign alwasy has charmed me- an effort to keep the beach visitors deiving at a reasonable speed.

Journal Entry 22 by wingbookczukwing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA on Sunday, February 20, 2005
The houses, until very recently were all quaint and funky...with each recent hurricane, the rebuilds seem more extravigant and large. And the land prices have skyrocketed in the past 15 years as well. Out of my price range, that's for sure. But there are a lot that are still more picturesque around.

Journal Entry 23 by wingbookczukwing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA on Sunday, February 20, 2005
You never know quite what you'll see at Folly...

Journal Entry 24 by wingbookczukwing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA on Sunday, February 20, 2005
Anyhow, today I chose to go towards the east end of the island and the Washout, a local hangout for surfers. There is a webcam for the Washout and soon for the Pier which is closer to the center of town.

At the washout today , I saw three surfers, and two dolphins. I don't think the dolphins show up in the picture, but the black dots are the surfers. (Actually, looking again...there is a tiny black spot in the water to the right of the surfer walking with the board, and to the left of the two in the water. It is a dolphin. Take my word for it.)

Journal Entry 25 by wingbookczukwing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA on Sunday, February 20, 2005
After changing my camera batteries, and leaving a book at the washout, I went on down to the old Coast Guard station on the beach, now a county park. From here, is is a short quarter mile walk or so to the beach and grand views. When I was a teenager, this was a manned coast guard station and off limits to the public. To get to the end of the island you had to go strictly by the beach, and then there werer huge "no trespassing" signs. As a result I feel slightly naughty going along the road now....

Some clever joe tampered with the old speed limit sign painted on the road though.

At the end of the path is the beach- and beyond is the channel between Folly and Morris Isalnd. Than lighthouse in the background? it used to sit on Morris Island. Remember that erosion I told you about at Folly? WEll, here you can see it in action.

That bluish bluimp on the horizon? That's me.

WEnt out on the beach for some nicer shots. Liked this one, particularly.

As I walked back to my car, ready to release some books,I met these fine folks in their "old fart cart" as the sign by the driver's seat prolcaimed. They were a lot of fun, and we chatted about BookCrossing and books and life. I left them with The Wine Dark Sea and Private Screening.

On the way home I went by a place where I know a pair of American Bald Eagles nest. My dinky little camera couldn't capture the nest at all, though I did see the eagles flying back and forth a bit. Then, I drove to the Piggly Wiggly (honest! that's the name of the store! It's a food store chain here.) to pick up a few things I need to help round out our supper tonight. The pig logo is everywhere...

Hope this brought another smile to your face.

Arugh!! I can't believe I forgot to put this picture in! On the way to Folly is a turn off for a little island, that, in legend, was a place pirates stashed some of their booty. In recent history, it became the home of a restaurant called Smugglers Cove. Everyone thought it was becasue of the legend, but eventually it was found that the owners were not paying their taxes. In the audits etc that followed, it was found that they were also into several other money making schemes, including money laundrying and drug running. Moral of the story? If you're doing illegal activities, don't draw attention to yourself by not paying your taxes and getting audited by the IRS.

Anyhow, the sign for the old restaurant (whichwas quite good, by the way) has been painted over in this most delightful way since last summer. I was afraid someone would have painted over this and was relieved to see that was not the case. It makes an ideal way to close for now.

OK thoughts on the book

Guy is an idiot. Candace is an idiot. Aunt what's her name is an idiot. If Amy had been named Sue, she'd be an idiot, but as it is against the "Rules of Amy" for anyone named Amy to be an idiot, she is clearly only deluded- temporarily, and masquerading as an idiot.

(Rules of Amy include:
1. All Amys are charming folks
2. Amys are not idiots
3. Amys are insightful and usually right
4. Amys need lots of Tim-Tams
5 No one but Amys may see the full list of Amy Rules, for Amys Rule!!!!)

Favorite quotes

"A Virgo, right? Oh joy! There should be more of us in the world!" (Did I mention my birthday is September 19- smack dab in the realm of Virgo, and a perfect excuse to send Tim-tams.)

"Nothing like this could happen with Pete! Not ever! He may not call me princess, but he knows how to treat me like one."

Favorite character development: Both Amy and Pete are readers. He buys her a copy of Harriette Arnow's Hunter's Horn.

Thought I couldn't get out of my mind: The townies are called "fudgies".

Thing that made me laugh out loud: Pete comes riding on a white horse when Amy is in danger.

Thanks for the fun, Pete!

RELEASE NOTES:

off to a special bookcrosser!

Journal Entry 40 by sparky-redhead from Minneapolis, Minnesota USA on Tuesday, March 1, 2005
It was groovy enough when I got the Amy books from bookczuk, but I had no idea until I finally got around to journalling them that they had originated with Skyring! Then I read the journal entries, which further widened the smile on my already beatific Amy-face. :-)

What neither of you could possibly know is that today of all days, I really needed just such a pick-me-up. My darling new hubby has been out to sea for weeks now (coming home in 9 days), and I miss him terribly. I also had a bit of a row with some folks on another chat board (one for women runners) and ended up resigning from it (long story) today, plus I haven't been sleeping well the last couple of nights. That sleeve of Girl Scout cookies that I ate this afternoon just didn't have the same effect on my disposition as did eating the entire package of Tim Tams (recently brought to me by Pete) on the drive home from our happy little visit in Richmond.

Anyway...I'm off to journal the other Amy book and figure out what to do with them. I'm tempted to leave them at my coffee shop OBCZ (which I know from Pete's entry that he originally thought of doing), but I feel a bit duty bound to find another deserving Amy upon whom to bestow them. If my new buddy in SC has any ideas, I'd love to know. I'd also love to know the full list of Amy Rules. The few I've seen sound spot on. :-)

Thanks ever so much!
Amy

Oh, splendiferous! What a great surprise!

Two Amys! Amy-bookczuk, you have such a devious mind. I *should* have thought that you'd send these books to Amy-sparky-redhead. It's obvious in hindsight.

I didn't think this book's travels could possibly get any better, but they just did! Thanks to both of you!

By way of retaliation, I'm going to take one of bookczuk's books, which has just landed on my doorstep, on a bookabout. http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/2218626
