There's a nice little detective story underneath the psychoanalysis - which as you can imagine gets a bit heavy in places, particularly with the issues that some of the characters have. Rubenfield seems to take great delight in these which is a little troubling and I found some of the descriptions a bit over the top, but I guess he needed something for Freud and his proteges (both real and fictional to get their teeth into).
The story revolves arounf Freud becoming involved in some nasty business when he visits New York. The visit is a matter of record, the events speculation and Rubenfield plays this with a light touch, Freud is not the main charachter and whilst his battle with Jung are a part of the story, Freud and his disciples feel distinctly 2-D.
