If any work in our century can be said to have revolutionarized the patterns of modern thought and scientific inquiry, it is this work, unquestionably a classic of science literature. Of the Interpretation of Dreams, Freud, himself wrote: "It contains the most valuable of all the discoveries it has been my good fortune to make."
This new translation by James Strachey is the most definitive one incorporating all the alterations, additions and deletions Freud made over a thirty-year period. The detailed commentary and scrupulous cross referencing enables the reader for the first time to understand clearly the development of Freud's thought. Together with Studies on Hysteria, the publication of the Interpretation of Dreams marked the beginning of psychoanaylsis.
This is one of my least favorite books by Freud. It didn't captivate my interest as much as Totem and Taboo did. Probably because I don't put a lot of stock into Freudian interpretation of dreams.
