The Glass Castle is a "must read" for anyone who grew up in the 60's and 70's. Jeanette Walls paints a portrait that took me back in time in a way that no other book I've read has done. I was right there with her...shoeless, starving and absolutely loved. This is one of the oddest, most honest portrayals of "life is simply not black and white" you're likely to encounter. A see-saw emotional ride not to be missed.
The conditions Jeanette Walls grew up in were appalling, at best, yet her endurance and the love of her bizarre family made me wonder, at times, if it was all that bad and if her parents didn't have something of a right idea, that they were just incapable of realizing to fruition, however unconventional. On the other hand, everytime I think of what those kids went through and what their parents put them through, I just shake my head in wonder that any of them survived. And yet... It will leave you questioning conventional thinking and the ways you think a life 'should' be lived on so many levels. And then again, it will leave you without any doubt that madness was at the heart of their circumstances. Read it. It will leave you breathless.
