A Penzance artist, her Quaker husband, a drunken Barbara Hepworth insulting their daughter..

I delayed reading this for a while due to the potentially grim subject matter - manic-depressive artist who seems to consume her family. But, it is brilliantly realised and ultimately very affirming. As other reviewers have noted, Gale *inhabits* his characters, and rings true on mental illness, the creative life, Cornwall, their various voices. Also, the only novel I've read with a Quaker character.

Honest and alive.
