Loved this, far more than I enjoyed the Kite Runner, I think. The story felt real and was very moving (shedding a tear in Kings Cross station whilst waiting for my train is not what I planned!). It made me very thankful for what I have.
Thanks for this RABCK, perfect-circle! I'm going to trust your judgment when you say that you liked it better than the Kite Runner, which I didn't like very much either.
Yes, it was much better than the Kite Runner and it's ranging among the better books I have read recently, though certainly not at the top of that list.
In my opinion, the character's actions - especially the more spectacular ones, and the ones that involved a great change of the character - weren't explained very well. For example Mariam's changing feelings for Jalil came way too abruptly I think, leaving the reader to wonder how she can see so clearly so suddenly, while all her life she had looked at him so differently. But I found the goings-on in Afghanistan well explained and tied to the characters' lives in such a way that they're easily remembered after reading the book.
I'm sending it to lesenmachtfroh next week, who had it on her wishlist.

It's on the way...
Arrived safely. Thank you very much. Will be read soon.
Finally I got to read the book. Although there are news about Afghanistan most present in our medias, we seem not to know a lot about that country nor about every day life.
For me in the story there were as many details described but also many aspects left out.
It really was a book worth reading. Sometimes I couldn't go on because of all the violence and misery.
The picture shows an embroidery which is made by an Afghan women. The project is called "Stickprojekt Laghmani"and supported by Pascale Goldberg a textile artist.

Moving and interesting story indeed. The global fight for women's rights is far from being over.
