I finnally got around to read this book and I'm so happy I did.
This brilliant historical novel is so rich in its description of the Battle of Franklin and its aftermath and so well writen that it is a great pleasure to read.
The plot is tight and well researched, the background and the mood are very well built and make a platform for one of the most impressive novels I've read about the American Civil war.
The characters have a real depth to them, especially Carrie and Maraiah but also Zachariah and even John, which makes the reading go so much smoother and fast, it's a real compulsive reading.
Carrie was a woman that should not be forgoten, what she achieved for those 1500 soldiers and for what their deaths meant was so unselfish and pure that she should receive public praise forevermore.
I found myself making the last couple of pages last a few days, just postponing the end of the story, making it last just a bit longer because I really didn't want to leave the world that Robert Hicks so cleverly created.
This is a very emotional, and dark at times, book.
