A book about a book - beautifully written, a great read, highly recommended by myself ;-)!
A young australian book conservator sets out to restore a precious medieval Jewish prayer book in Sarajevo and uncovers not only the history of the book but also the history of her family and much more...

And the book I will send out to travel the world.

If you wish to be added to the list, please PM me with your details.

Note that you must be prepared to mail internationally.

You will be sending the book to the person who appears after you in the list, so you need to PM them to get their address! If you don't hear from them within a few days, PM them again. If after a few more days you still haven't heard anything, please let me know.

It's not a race, but please read and send the book on as speedily as you can, other people are dying to read it too. (6 weeks at the most, otherwise let the next person know about it.)

Please journal the book once you have received it (so we all know where it currently is) and again when you have read it and ready to post it.(so we know what you thought of it!)

If you're the last person on the list (i.e. we run out of members) the book comes back to me until there are more interested parties...
Anything forgotten? I hope not!

This has to be in the top 3 books I have read in 2008. Brooks beautifully told the history of the Sarajevo Haggadah, an illuminated Hebrew codex from 15th century Spain, by interweaving the story of Hanna Heath and her examination of the book with stories of the people it touched going back to its creation. Each of the separate stories from the Nazi occupation of Sarajevo and the underground freedom fighters to the story of how the paintings were created in Moorish Spain were totally fascinating. What was really interesting was the cooperation of both Muslims and Jews during different periods as well as the periods of hate during the Spanish Inquisition and World War II. Brooks based her story on some real-life happenings related to the very real Sarajevo Haggadah. High recommendation for this one!

I have PMed Shroffland a couple of times but am still awaiting an address. As soon as I receive it, I'll get the book in the mail. Thanks again Tinina67 for sharing this fascinating book.

I can certainly see why Ms. Brooks prose might win her a Pulitzer or two. I would read other work by her, providing the subject matter was interesting enough, but I find that I oscillate between loving this tale, or merely liking it immensely (a 7 or 8 star rating), depending on which sections I conjure up in my memory. I thoroughly enjoyed the style in which the book was written; Alternating back and forth from the present restoration to the vignettes of the books history, and the "people" of the book, if you will. But, I think the whole storyline with Hannahs mother, the 'romance' she had with Ozren, the 'betrayal' of her loyalties - I wasn't as interested in the present story as I was in the back stories, I suppose. Having said that, however, I think this was a meticulously researched novel, for certain, wrapped in a very intriguing storyline about an interesting bit of history. Well worth the reading time, and one I would recommend to those who enjoy a little thoughtfulness with their escapism.

Thanks for sharing this one, Tina, and I hope to have it moving again soon.

This book comes highly recommended and, like other Brooks novels, doesn't let you down. It is quick-paced enough to be a fast read, but substantive enough to satisfy your desire to be provoked. The novel follows the journey of the Sarajevo Haggadah, switching between a modern time tale of the haggadah's restoration and various independent back-stories about the haggadah's origins and keepers and their respective histories. I must confess that I enjoyed the back-stories more than the modern tale of Hanna and her various personal struggles. When Hanna was focused on the haggadah -- brilliant. But the whole mother/daughter conflict was tiresome and not directly consequential to the novel's plot. Still, 80% of this book was thoroughly enjoyable and fascinating. I particularly enjoyed the exploration of how the three western religions have committed atrocities and acts of unity, in the name of their God (Yahweh, Allah). This novel will travel across Canada to the edge of our fair prairies starting tomorrow.
