My Old Sweetheart is set in Hawaii in the 1950s. But this is not the Hawaii of Pan Am and the Hilton; rather it is a place that Jean Rhys might well have recognized, a place of lush extravagance and dangerous charm.

Lily, growing up in this hothouse atmosphere, is transfixed by Anna, her beautiful but brittle and erratic mother. Her father, Sheridan, a doctor much respected in the community, behaves towards his wife at best with coldness, at worst with unbelievable crassness. As Anna's life disintegrates, a process accelerated by the drugs supplied by Sheridan, Lily and her constant companion Tosi, an orphan of Hiroshima, watch with grave but anxious eyes, while Jack and Jessie, the younger twins, play happily beneath the gardenias...

The truths and tragedies of an innocent childhood are reconstructed to form a moving elegy for an extraordinary family. In it's portrayal of the relationship between a child and her doomed mother it is unforgettable.
