This is historical fiction by the author of the Cadfael mysteries and set mostly in his city of Shrewsbury. It is the beginning of the Wars of the Roses and pits Henry IV against Harry Percy (Hotspur). She doesn't say that Henry had Richard II done to death in Pontefract Castle, but she might as well have. Really, the book explains how the person of "Prince Hal" became Henry V. Do we have choices or are we pushed around by the fates? Hotspur and Hal would both say that there is always a choice. I don't think Edith Pargeter (Ellis Peters) liked usurpers, even when they didn't start out to go after someone's crown. It's history, so of course the ending is sad.
