Had this for years, and it very yellow as a result! I cant remember what it is like. I think it is clever and complex. It has been described as anti stalinist, but Kundera himself said it was a love story, but about a character condemned to triviality by a joke ...

(Oops - sorry I forgot to journal until now!)

Picked up as a 'leftover' from last month's York BC Meetup (dixxy-D having failed to reclaim it for wild-releasing). It looks potentially interesting, worthwhile and all that - but I'm just not quite in the mood to read something like this just at the moment, I'm afraid.

Planning to take this to the Leeds Meetup, to see if it can find a reader there... (that's better than wild-releasing, isn't it?!)

It's taken me quite a while to plough through this on. Not sure why, since I quite enjoyed it, but it made it a bit difficult to keep all the names in my head. Also the fact that different chapters were narrated by different characters made it difficult to keep the thread.

Picked up at the Leeds meetup. Not sure when I'll get round to reading it, though.

Blurb: When Ludvik sends his girlfriend Marketa a postcard - "Optimism is the opium of the people... Long live Trotsky" - she is not amused. Nor are the authorities. So Ludvik is sent to exercise his unappreciated sense of humour in a labour camp.

I originally picked this up because it's on the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die list. I've read other books by Milan Kundera and haven't enjoyed them much. I find him a bit of a smartarse. A quick peek at the opening pages of this book makes me think I'm not going to change my mind. So I'm marking this as available for now.
