Synopsis
In the foothills of the Himalayas sits a once grand, now crumbling house - home to three people and a dog. There is the retired judge dreaming of colonial yesterdays; his orphaned granddaughter Sai who has fallen for her clever maths tutor; the cook, whose son Biju writes untruthful letters home from New York City; and Mutt, the judge's beloved dog. Around the house swirls mountain mist - but also the forces of revolution and change. For a new world is clashing with the old, and the future offers both hope and betrayal ...

Thank you for this book, toshokanin! I requested it because I would like to read it myself and because I know who to share it with after I've read it. It will probably be a while before I get to it but I will write another journal entry when I'm done.
I took the book with me on vacation to Mansfield, Missouri, and I have been reading it ever since I took off from Frankfurt Airport right before Christmas. I'm leaving it here now although I have read only about half of it. It took me so long to get even that far, and I think that's because the story never really got going - too many flashbacks about too many characters. I did like the characters and what happened to them individually but I just couldn't see the necessity of putting them all together in one novel. Maybe one day I will re-read it and be patient enough to read on until I see that necessity.
I'm leaving the book with my friend karin1004, who might read it herself or give it to friends or family. Either way, I would love to hear from the next reader in a journal entry: How did you like this read?
