I never quite know what to expect with a Ben Elton book. I tend to look for wacky Blackadder comedy, but in this case I got a pager turner mystery with lots of horror of war and fair bit of improbable derring do. The hero borders on being unlikeable but manages to come across as vulnerable and human despite is sometimes superhuman ability to not get blown up and to solve crime. Plus he loves his wife and that is always nice.
