A tale of a connected group of families, in India in the early 1950s, just after Partition and Independence - a time of political manoeuvring and change.

Lata is the subject of the search for a suitable boy, with her mother keen to have her daughter married within the year. Several suitors emerge, through serendipitous meeting, connection, and active searching. The concept of arranged marriage, love, compatibility, and choice are woven among the events of a year.

The rest of the cast of characters was vast, so varied, and the source of amusement, boredom and interest - the interweaving threads helped keep this read from abandonment, along with the couplets. Thank goodness there is a family genogram for each at the front, which I consulted frequently!

The other character here is India itself, with it's multiculturalism, rampant racism and caste segregation and prejudices, and political status. The rural and then the city contrasts of living.

In the early portion of the book there were gems of reminders of my own travels to India, as the cast of characters were developing. The groping of Holi, and the gender disparities a strong memory involved.

Several characters were more endearing to me, and others complete bores, and then the choices from Lata was a disappointing end to such a long read.

Read for as a book I was scared of on my shelf. I mean, the size of it! One of the longest single volume novels in the English language - at 1474 pages, it's quite the doorstop I have been lugging around.
