Picked this up second hand earlier this month. I'm reading it for the 2007 Horror Read and Release Challenge - June's theme is Fire and this is one of the 'recommended' books. I have read somthing by Michael Slade before, but cant remember what it was called, although I do remember enjoying it (although I also remember it was gruesome!)

Read this and liked it, though it was gruesome as predicted! Author tends to ramble a bit sometimes with history and background, which I found a little irritating sometimes, but I suspect some people would really like this aspect - snippets of knowledge to share with your mates!

The characters (both goodies and baddies) are fun and the tension is maintained. Some of the detail of torture and death is pretty graphic!! so be prepared.
