Our intrepid hero, Harry Bosch, is in a sad way in this one. His home has been condemned due to an earthquake, his girlfriend has left him, and he is drinking too much. He is suspended pending a psychiatric evaluation and spends his time investigating an unsolved crime from 1961 ... the brutal slaying of a prostitute who happened to be his own mother.
One of Connelly's best, imho. Enjoyed every page of it.
