Before I Die is a quite outstanding novel by debut writer Jenny Downham, which DFB will be publishing in hardcover this July. We are, by modern standards, publishing Before I Die in record quick time and there is really no time for the usual word of mouth to gather momentum so I am relying on you reading this proof!”
Right, to my review:
16 year old Tessa has only a few weeks to live, so writes a list of 10 things to do before she dies. It’s not the usual kind of list that you hear about, as she wants to experience life to the full in the short time she has left.
The list includes break the law, drive a car, take drugs and have sex. Her best friend, Zoey, starts off all enthusiastic about helping Tessa, but soon starts to need help herself when things go a little bit haywire in her own life.
You get to meet Tessa’s dad, who gave up his job 4 years ago to look after her when Tessa was first diagnosed with leukemia , her younger brother, her estranged mum and her next door neighbour, Adam, who becomes her new boyfriend.
It’s a joy to get to know Tessa & heart-wrenching at the end when the inevitable happens.
It’s real, it makes you think and made me hold my children tight.
