Salinger: The Great American Writer, The Great American Recluse. Whichever way you describe him, you cannot leave out the fact that he is one of the best American novelists and inspiration for many a writer I know personally. Though not as prolific as "Catcher In The Rye", made even more famous, unfortunately, by its history of being one of the first "banned" novels, but also its bizarre appeal to famous assassins, "Nine Stories" is still Salinger, and anyway you look at it, Salinger, in my opinion, can not go wrong.
