Michael Scott Rohan is an excellent writer with a superb grasp of myth and legend. He can create a story which is internally consistent and fabricated from his own ideas, whilst also drawing on myths from around the world.
The Gates of Noon is the second in a series of three linked books. To call them a trilogy is perhaps a little misleading as each novel stands alone and whilst the later books refer back to the earlier ones there is enough information that it doesn't matter if you read the first one last or whatever. On the other hand, you aren't swamped with back-story, so you can concentrate on the current plot.
Steve is hollow. He has sacrificed his soul to get where he is now, not to any dark demon, but simply on the altar of his own ambition. So what happens when a hollow man is taken into a realm which is simply waiting to fill him up.
There is something for everybody here, action, travel, myth, magic, mayhem, fantasy, romance, intrigue... the list really does go on and on.
