It is 1917, a ship surveyor who has escaped active service in the war, is trapped in an unhappy marriage with frigid, churchy May. His roving eye falls on Mamie, a girl of her times - fond of men, proud of her brief career as a dance,enjoying the new freedom of wartime.

George pounces. But this time his lust will have terrible consequences, causing waves that reach the 1960s, when a detective (with a burnt out marriage of his own) has to delve into an old and chilling crime.
