I've read things by Maugham that I thought were very good, but this just wasn't my cup of tea, much less "the greatest novel of our time," as the cover blurb has it. I just kept wanting to smack some sense into Philip.
I notice this is an abridged edition so maybe I'm not giving it a fair shake,
but if I were the editor I think I would have abridged it even more!
The pages were falling out so I used this to practice bookbinding - this
was one of my first subjects and didn't turn out all that well, but at least
the pages are held together now.
