It's does this book a disservice to label it "travel" because what it really is is a tour de force combination of art, history, politics, architecture, essay, reflections, meditations and more about the many facets of Florence, Italy. My favorite teacher in college once told me "refuse to die until you've seen Florence" and so I did this spring and now know more about it because I've read Mary McCarthy's wonderful book. A must read for anyone planning to visit Florence.
