Perhaps the best book on the second world war I've read from a german perspective, and certainly the funniest in the most bleak possible sense, this tale of serial murder, detection against the odds and narrow escapes - for Hitler, for Tanz and for Corporal hartmann - is a first rate mystery and better than a dozen modern so-called 'psychological thrillers'. When millions are being murdered all across Europe - systematically, and with goverment approval - what's the murder of one prostitute? Quite a lot, actually, to a dashing Abwher officer, a near alcoholic but very wily French copper, and their Polish counterpart. But when the three suspects are some of the most powerful Generals in the Third Reich, it's going to take more than solid detective work to crack this case. And it's going to take til long after the war is over - if, indeed, it ever is...
Utterly superb!
