Got the audio version of this book, but it is abridged. I like listening to short stories in the car, though, so hoping it isn't too abridged.

Well, this audiobook is a mixed bag. First, it is abridged, about half the stories that are in the book. Of the 10 stories on the three discs, only the Introduction (really a story written by Dave Eggers...read by him, too), "The Lost Boys," "Why McDonald's Fries Tastes So Good," and "Local Hipster Overexplaining Why He Was At The Mall" really interested me from start to finish. "The Pamphleteer" is whiney and selfish and is my least favorite. The story by David Sedaris is quite good, but not read by him and after hearing him read all his books, I just can't enjoy another reader. "Snacks" is overwrought though an important issue that rarely gets addressed (overweight boys).

But the longest story, "Higher Education," is the one that did me in. It was originally in Sports Illustrated and I would not have made it 1/4 through if I were reading it. Terribly cliche and wordy, but listening to the story I made it through to the good part, which was short-lived, but interesting. It gets terribly sentimental, but given the subject, there is nowhere else the author could go, I suppose. Not the ordinary writer anyway.

All in all, this was worth the purchase price since I got it at a deep employee discount. I would not have been happy if I paid full price. Perhaps I am just not the target age for this type writing.

I am hoping to trade this for another AudioBook.

My favorite stories:
My Fake Job by Rodney Rothman - Anyone who has been employed in an anonymous, large corporate complex could relate to this.

Local Hipster Overexplaining Why He was at the Mall by The Onion - I fell into this crowd after college and I still don't shop at the mall...really...I don't...:-)

Why McDonald's Fries Taste so Good by Eric Schlosser. Fast Food Nation is The Jungle of our day. Bravo to Schlosser for exposing what really goes into our processed foods. Yuck.
