Nice! Haruf's storytelling just sucks you in.
Jack Burdette returns to the small town of Holt after eight years' absence. This novel unravels Jack's story of childhood pranks and adult insensitivity that ended in the destruction of several lives when he disappeared.

Caught as part of a bookring.
Although it was a quick and easy read, I didn't enjoy it all that much. The tone was too conversational for my taste.
Sent off to NYNJAGRRRL this morning.
Sent off to NYNJAGRRRL this morning.
I got the book today. I am excited to start reading.
This was a quick read. It was nice to read a light book after some of the nonfiction books I have been reading. The ending was quite a surprise.
First published 1990. PB, 176 p.
The story begins like an old good Western: a baddy returns to a small town, and people get on their toes. The baddy of the novel, Jack Burdette, once was a high school football hero, then he started a good career, got engaged... Fortune smiled on him. But he wanted more, took it, and disappeared.
When waiting for Burdette’s homecoming (people did not expect it ever to happen), Haruf shows us the small town’s people and everyday life, joys and sorrows.
The author writes easily and agreeably, if not with much peculiarity. To my mind, Plainsong (written 1999) was more skilful and more enjoyable. Anyway, I wanted to read this work of Haruf (I think this is not available in Finnish). Thanks a lot for sharing, DoveiLibri, and a big apology for keeping the book such a long time. Now it is sent Priority to Singapore.

Got it, thanks. Will read soonest, but after my current book which I have also taken a little longer than usual. Still in holiday mood. Surprise this is such a thin book, thinking it's the normal paperback type.
It's an easy read, and I like the writing style like narrating about what really happen in a small town, but not so much the ending. I would have hoped for a happier turnout. It's also very heartwarming read about small town lives. Will send to the next reader once I got the mailing address.
Hi Nikel27, your profile led me to your add at Rabck.com. As it was updated this 19-Feb, I take it that it's correct, and will send the book to you. Will go to the post office tomorrow. Cheers.

I'm going to share this book as a "Ray it Forward." I borrowed the idea from crrcookie as well as her explanation of this type of ray.
Let me try and explain what a "Ray It Forward" is. More or less it is the lazy way for me to set up a common BookRay. Ordinarily a BookRay has a list of participants and it gets mailed down the line to the last person who does whatever they wish with the book. Well, I have no desire to maintain a list so this is what I figure. I’ll find the first person that wants this book and send it to them. I just ask that they pass the book along "BookRay" fashion when they are done with it.
If you are in possession of this book then please look for another BookCrosser to pass it to. Check the wish lists, the forums, a yahoo group, the BookRelay, or offer it at a meeting …whatever way you choose to pass it on is up to you. If it seems that no other BookCrossers want it then send it along its way as a wild release but this should be a last resort.
What are the advantages of Ray it Forward?
Time frame – I ask that you pass the book along in a couple months or so but because there is not a "waiting list" the time is a little more relaxed than a standard BookRay.
Shipping Preferences – Choose your own. If you need to post within your own country then do so. If you choose to send international that is great too. If postal costs are a problem right now then hand it to another BookCrosser at a meeting, release to an OBCZ, ask for postage from the receiver or find some other way to get the book in the hands of another BookCrosser.
***Please note that it would be polite to let the next person know that this is a Ray It Forward book before you pass it along to them so that they will know that they will be expected to pass it on in a couple months.

This was a fairly good read, though the end was not quite what I wanted it to be. Very surprising...
I liked Haruf's writing style and will look out for 'Plainsong' which sounds very promising.
Thanks again for the RABCK, nikel27. The book will now travel to Qantaqa!

Arrived today, thanks a lot for the RABCK! I love receiving books that have travelled such a long way! I'll make sure to keep it moving!
I read this book a while ago. At first, I liked the story a lot but the ending sort of destroyed my reading experience for me (because I found it very rushed and annoying).
This book (together with a heap of others) is now on its way to katopua who will then send it to the Philippines.
