Based in the court of Mary Tudor, this is the story of Hannah, a young girl whose father is forced to flee with her from Spain after her mother is put to death for being Jewish. They reach London where they pass themselves off as a Protestant bookseller and his boy apprentice. The son of the King's protector comes to their bookshop and sends Hannah as a Fool to spy on the Princess Mary. The story then follows Hannah as she grows up, exploring the role of women in society while she herself is passed off as a boy, her feelings for the man she has been betrothed to since she was small and what she really wants for herself.
I am going to pass this book on to my mum, who also enjoyed The Other Boleyn Girl.
