Given to me by someone at work - who knows I love these types of books

From Amazon
The Shadow lines is not what it appears to be. But as one slowly moves through this story spanning generations and continents, one feels a familiar old pull within. that of memory, identity, which in this ever changing world is constantly in a flux. The protagonist is a boy who grows up admiring his cousin Tridib, who with the power of words (and maps) enlivens this little boy's life. Tridib shares a bond with May, his father's English friend's daughter. Meanwhile, our protagonist too grows up listening to his cousin Ila's tales from all over the world, thanks to her IFS officer.

Between all these complex relationship is grandmother, who lives in nostlagia of that enchanted childhood she had in Dhaka before partition. The book moves slowly beautifully and conflict makes the incision at the right points. The complex web of relationships, of love, honour, friendship is cruelly broken when riots break out.

Beautifully written, the book gives a fresh perspective to those who have faced political conflicts

I didn't know how best to describe this book and so c&p'd the above as it said everything I would have if I was any good at writing reviews.

I really loved this book, read very quickly as it's is shorter than some of Amitav Ghosh's other books.

I've received this one today - thank you SO much Heaven-Ali for sending it to me!! There were so many things happening in my life since I've contacted you about this book that it came as a total surprise! I'm just recovering from some harder times, so it came in a period when I'm needing to read a GOOOD book, so this will be the perfect candidate. Thanks again! I'm becoming a true Ghosh's fan, I'm only sorry he hasn't written that many books yet.

Ali, my bookshelf is at your disposal!!

In the beginning all the going and coming back in time made me a bit confused, but once I got into the book, I really enjoyed it! I didn't find it the "typical" Amitav Ghosh book, but it's anyway quite good.

Thanks again for having sent me the book, Ali! I'll be sure sharing it with others.

Ages ago, Mady asked if we could send her our copy of another Amitav Ghosh book. Of course we could - and off it went. No need for anything back, I said!

Cut to last week - a lovely PM from Mady - she has come across another Ghosh book and would we like it? After warning that Matth3w might take a while to get to it, I said yes please.

Today, the book arrived. I opened the packaging, and, as usual, popped it open to see if there was a note in there, and who registered the book originally.

And whose name should be staring up at me from the label, but my good friend Heaven-Ali's, who lives a couple of miles from me and shares almost exactly my taste in books!

I'll try to send it far away when we've finished it - do you think it will boomerang back?

Thanks for the RABCK mady!

I found this to be slightly atypical for Ghosh, in that the magical realism feel of other books I've read by him didn't appear in this one. But that wasn't a negative point; the author used his considerable writing powers to create a tapestry of interwoven stories and conversations, darting between the present, the past and somewhere in between, with a growing sense of unease about what did happen back when the protagonist was still a child. Not yet another Partition novel (phew!), Partition plays a part, but knowledge is assumed and we concentrate instead on the personal, the internal.

Excellent book and I'll find somewhere far away to send it!
