A group 4 bump into each other one new years eve at Topper's house. Instead of jumping however they decide to keep an eye out for each other.

Martin Sharp - A TV presenter who has had all, cars, women, fame.
Maureen - Single Mother with a disabled child who is not even aware of her presence.
Jess - teenager split from her boyfriend
JJ - Rock star come pizza boy, Girlfriend dumped him does not want to go on.

This unlikely combination of people are just that people who have met is strange circumstances, not friends.

Each character writes what is going on from there point of view as the story evolves. In the similar style as the Motley Crue "The Dirt", it does not work as well as unlike "The Dirt" the story is written by the same person. It still works though, creating a good and interesting read.

I read this book for an on-line discussion group. The discussion wasn't brilliant, but I did really like the book. I think I would like to read it again, making notes as I go along with all the wonderful one-liners Nick casually throws in, exposing subtle truths on many levels. I think there are some things that don't work as well - like Jess being so non-American (why was he ever American in the frst place?) - and at times the similarity of the four voices, but there are many other parts of pure genius, real black comic / tragic style.
