The story is about Vanyel, his flaws and strengths as a person and his relationships with friends, lovers, and family, and that is done exceedingly well. Lackey has a sure touch depicting the harm people do to people. Vanyel is a misfit both in his family and with his peers and he suffers not only from their treatment but from his defenses against it.

I loved it, and I cried with Vanyel.
A beautifully written fantasy, full of very credible characters, and I'm glad that I have the second book of this trilogy ready at hand.
I pulled this book out of the YAEB and read it in one go.

Caught with the English Fantasy Box.
I like the story so far and am looking forward to the other two parts.

I have taken this one out of the - "English Fantasy Box" of ekaterin4luv. Thank you for putting it into the box - it might stay quite a while on my Mount to be read, but then again it might not - sounds very interesting and I read a couple by Mercedes Lackey and loved them all.
I´m trying to read as many of my English TBR before the Convention in Oxfort next year so I decided to take this one out of the shelf yesterday evening. It was... well not exactly a mistake, but I have problems keeping my eyes open today because I read till the wee hours and couldn´t put the book down. It is very suspencefull. I read the first 160 pages all in one go, and would have finished the book if I didn´t have to sleep a bit befor going to work! Good thing I have both sequels here! It is one of those books where you wonder why it had to stay in the shelf for SO long before you get around to read it. It would have deserved to be devoured as soon as it arrived.
Edit 19.11.2014:
I finished reading the book last night. Without pause I opened the next installment. I cried with Vanyel, too. I loved the book but I hope the next part has some hope and a few bright hours for him...

This book will go to the annual Bookcrossing Convention which will take place in Oxford (2015). I´ll bring these three books gift-wraped for the book swamp game.
