Tremendous audiobook with Kate Nelligan narrating the story of a woman artist who remembers her girlhood in 1940's Toronto.Atwood's writing here is insightful and compelling.

Sending this out for postage. I did listen to it and thought I'd reviewed it but obviously forgot to. Now it's been too long and I don't remember much about it! If memory serves, I thought it was pretty good!

Journal Entry 7 by valentina1209 from Bethpage, New York USA on Wednesday, November 29, 2006
arrived today, thanks!

This is an example of how bookcrossing has gotten me out of the rut of sticking to certain genres, and provides me with the opportunity to read/listen to books I'd never have considered before. Although not my usual "cup-of-tea", I liked this story and it made my commute to/from work far less stressful and more enjoyable.

This is my first Atwood book. I have read a lot about her here on BC. It wasn't what I was expecting, but I will try another of her books. I am deciding how to pass it on.

Selected from Big John Lefty's Audiobook Box. Funny, I almost bought this recently but decided to get The Blind Assassin instead.

Excellent. This made an Atwood fan out of me.

Even though it is an abridgement, it seemed very complete.

08/10/07: Sending this off in Carlissa's Audio Box.

Journal Entry 15 by KateKintail from Burke, Virginia USA on Saturday, September 29, 2007
Took this out of the bookbox. Sounds interesting and I've always wanted to read an Atwood book. This seems like a nice introduction/trial. Thanks!

Journal Entry 16 by KateKintail from Burke, Virginia USA on Thursday, April 10, 2008
Hmmm. Even now that I'm done, I'm not sure how I feel about this book. I like the psychological/social aspects and the big themes. I liked the rather nonlinear storytelling and only had trouble following the thread of the story during my jump from tape 1 to tape 2. Yet it didn't really grab me the way I'd hoped. I've read so many great reviews of this book and a few reviews from people who just don't get its popularity. I think I must be in that latter camp. It felt rushed in places and the adult side didn't balance out the childhood one- if anything, it paled in comparison. Such a great, intense build up and then... I don't know, I think it rather fizzled out.

The parts I did like- like the characters and the observations on human actions/mentalities were brilliant. The pacing (maybe I didn't like the reader?) and direction of the story didn't work for me.

I'm really glad I gave it a shot, though. It didn't really feel like anything was missing since it jumped around a lot, but maybe reading it unabridged would be a different experience for me? I've heard that Atwood's books are all very different so I'm definitely not put off. This just wasn't what I had been hoping for.
