The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency (No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency)

Wayward daughters. Missing Husbands. Philandering partners. Curious conmen. If you've got a problem, and no one else can help you, then pay a visit to Precious Ramotswe, Botswana's only - and finest - female private detective. Her methods may not be conventional, and her manner not exactly Miss Marple, but she's got warmth, wit and canny intuition on her side, not to mention Mr J.L.B. Maketoni, the charming proprietor of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors. And Precious is going to need them all as she sets out on the trail of a missing child, a case that tumbles our heroine into a hotbed of strange situations and more than a little danger ...Delightfully different, THE NO.1 LADIES' DETECTIVE AGENCY offers a captivating glimpse of an unusual world.

I started this widely praised book with high hopes but was in most part disappointed after all. I couldn't stand "African English" as I call it, short sentences and simple language, that McCall Smith (in picture) uses in dialogue. Also the short story kind of telling was disturbing even though there was an parallel ongoing plot, too. Nevertheless, Mma Ramotswe was a fascinating personality and I enjoyed her strong self-esteem. In the end of the book there was a sample chapter of the next book in the series, Tears of the Giraffe, and it seemed more enjoying and I still might try on it even though I didn't like so much of this first one.

It arrived safely today. Thanks Millam.
While I did enjoy the book, i'm not sure i understand why it's been so widely acclaimed. I would describe it as a nice relaxing read, but nothing special as to the writing. I guess what makes it special is the fact that it's set in Africa, but i can't help deplore the fact that while African authors are so rarely read, British authors with books set in Africa gain so much acclaim. All is in marketing?
I decided to send this book on a ray, which should start this week. Here's the list of participants (the ray is still open - new participants are welcome and will be added at the end of the list). This is an international bookray.

I enjoyed the detective story parts of the book but the reading did not flow smoothly from chapter to chapter. I have pm'd HallieK for her address.

Got this in the mail the other day and can't wait to read it. My mom really enjoyed it and said I should try it out. So, here I am.
Well, we're in the middle of moving to our first house and I just don't have time to read. I've already had the book for too long, so I mailed it out to the next in line this morning. Thanks for setting up the ring!

received today in the mail. thanks!
i didnt much enjoy this book either. the story was interesting but very superficial. the cases were solved so quickly, they didnt have much of an impact on the story, while the characters personal stories were interesting, but clearly not the main focus of the book. i also did not like the dialogue much.
will be mailing this to MandaJo in a day or two.

i am sorry that i never put in an official 'mailed off' journal entry, but i did put this one in the mail back in october, as promised. i will start PM'ing MandaJo for an update on its status. very sorry i did not get delivery confirmation, i have learned my lesson.
Fortunately, this book DID arrive quite some time ago, so it is safe. I'm in the process of passing along all of the rings and rays I've held up, so this will be along as soon I have an address. So sorry!!!
