An imaginary "what if" tale by one of the greatest living American authors, Philip Roth imagines how America might have developed had Charles Lindbergh, not just an aviation hero but a "rabid isolationist" defeated Roosevelt in the 1940 Presidential elections... and then fraternized with Hitler and supported anti-Semitic actions....
Got this today in trade, together with a lovely postcard. Thank you!
Very very good book, must read more by this author. The ending was alittle disapointing, in that it suddenly stopped, about 4/5ths into the book, the ending was given away and then it rolled back and explained in more detail stories previously mentioned in the narration. I like that this book didn't make out that Lindbergh's supporters were evil, just that it was a slow and creeping menace of aparanoia and anti-semitism; in this, it helped that the Jewish family of the narrator was not deeply observant and religious, rather they were ethnical Jews. The book is so realistic, andit is easy to see how something similar could happen in the real world.
