Very good story. Tracks the changes in an Afghani booksellers life through the various regimes. Not quite as gripping toward the end as it was in the beginning

Read this over the Christmas holidays. It's very popular at the moment, so I was glad to find out what it's all about!

I did find myself wondering how the author knew what the various members of the real family she was writing about felt and said about certain things, but the little details that obviously come from her observances of real life in Afghanastan are what makes this book so interesting - pictures of women and babies scratched out on shampoo bottles, the importance of shoes as the only distinguishing features visible on women outside their home, the availability of water and electricity only at certain times of the day.....

Not sure how this ended up back with me, but *hello* Gizmopuddy, this book is still in circulation, and has been to at least four members of my family since it was last journalled, none of whom designed to make an entry for it!! What would you do with them!!
