In 1940, George and Violet White send their ten-year old daughter Elizabeth to live with Violet's childhood friend, Eileen O'Connor, and her husband and six children, in Kilgarret,Ireland in order to spare Elizabeth the dangers and hardships of wartorn England. Five years later, when the war is over, Elizabeth returns to them a young lady they barely recognize. And she has formed a friendship with Aisling, the O'Connor daughter her own age, that will last a lifetime. 20 years of this friendship is the subject of this novel.
