Pulled this from the bookbox. Looks like a good one!
I didn't care much for this book. I think partly it was because I didn't like the narrator, and partly because I couldn't stand a lot of the writing. Nevertheless, I finished it.
The narrator, Sidney, goes between being a sassy, sexy, confident woman to being a neurotic, insecure whiner, which resulted in doing nothing more than making her very irritating to me. I didn't care what happened to her and didn't care about her romance with a married man her father's age. It's hard to read a book when you don't care what happens to the characters.
But even more annoying than Sidney were the writing styles in the book. Sidney is a poet - and her poems were horrible. After the first two, I skipped the rest. The narration was abrasive at times, too. I don't know why the author of this book did this, but she had the characters speak without using contractions. For example, the characters would talk to each other like this:
"I am sure that I did not call you."
"We are not communicating very well."
"I know that it is a problem when we do not speak to each other for days at a time."
"It is a definite concern ."
Not only does this make the conversation stilted, but both of the characters speak in the same manner; they don't have their own voices! It was VERY irritating to me. I kept re-wording their conversations in my head. Doesn't the author realize that people don't speak in complete sentences and rarely use grammatically correct words???
Anyway, not one of my favorite chick-lits, but they can't all be, can they? :)
