David Halberstam, who dissected the Vietnam policy of the Kennedy and Johnson administrations in _The Best and the Brightest_ and the Balkans policy of the Clinton administration in _War in a Time of Peace_ turns his gaze on the "Big Three" US automobile makers as they fail to appreciate . . . and then desparately try to deal with . . . the challenge posed by their Japanese rivals. The stakes are a little lower than in Halberstam's political books (the survival of companies rather than nations) but the reporting is every bit as detailed and the profiles of the characters are every bit as compelling.
