I read this about 10 years ago and remember little about it. I do remember I liked it, but found it a tad strange in a way I can quite put my finger on.
It was one of the first generation of science-fiction novels to experiment with machine-phase nanotechnology. (Drexler style nanotech, i.e. nanobots)
