What a wonderful, wonderful book. I loved it - didn't want the story to end. I cried, I laughed and want everyone else to read it.
I was amazed that the author is *my age* and feel a little green!!
The opening chapter reminded me of the language of Clockwork orange but its strength wears off through the book.

To a good friend of mine who has blessed me with books and friendship
To a good friend of mine who has blessed me with books and friendship
It's not every day you get to meet a friend for the first time, go on a picnic in lovely sunny weather, in a lovely bit of the world AND get new bookses to read, but today I managed all four.
Woooo!
Actually, I was excited enough, and then I got home and found the little box of Winnie The Pooh white chocolate clouds in the bag as well...
What a cracking day I've had.
Thanks Marge!

I have to agree with MargeryK about the style of the writing in the first chapter; it really threw me for a good while. And how dare someone our age be an award-winning author!
I like books which have that family-through-the-ages saga feel, without any of the heaving-bosoms connotation the 's' word has gained, and this is one such book. But language aside I found it quite difficult to get in to, and wasn't quite as touched by the pulling together of the various threads as I could have been. I blame coming back to crazy shifts for dulling my senses somewhat.
But it's another of those books I'm glad to have read, and thank you so much to MargeryK for giving it to me all that time ago...
