The story of the greatest voyage of discovery you never heard of. The U.S. Exploring Expedition 1838-1842 accomplished all of its objectives, among them discovering Antarctica and mapping nearly the entire Pacific Ocean, but ended badly with the court-martial of its leader, LT Charles Wilkes, and other recriminations that destroyed its legacy. Where Lewis and Clark succeeded fabulously and we are now celebrating the 200th anniversary of their expedition, the U.S. Ex-Ex succeeded fabulously and is forgotten.
