Dragon Wing is the first book in the seven volume Death Gate Cycle. There were some interesting concepts in this book, but overall I would call it average. The ending was rather dull in my opinion, and some of the magic theory described in the book was confusing. This series is by the authors of the great original Dragonlance books, so I will probably give the next Death Gate installment a try.
