1/27/05: this book reminded me of -sarah plain and tall- in its emotionally understated but effective writing. the story, as you probably know, is a coming-of-age story focusing on the eldest son of a poor family of sharecroppers in the 19th-century american south. the book is fairly slow for the first half and a lot of the events are so unadorned that they fall under the radar; but when reflected upon, the book resonates in the same strange way that ancient myths do.

will be passing this on as part of a group of newbery medal winners bookrings.

What a sad story. I've never read this book or seen the movie, so it was all new to me. Was there hope in it? Possibly, hope that suffering ends. That there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Or maybe the message is life is unfair and then you die. Could be. A very simple book with a deep meaning. Thanks for sharing! Will finish "Johnny Tremain" and send back to spacedog.
