It took me a long time to get into Bill Bryson and I think some of his books can be a bit hit or miss - this one, however, I think is his best so far. It's autobiographical - the story of his childhood - but it's also a testament to a lost world of small town, 1950s USA, particularly Des Moines, Iowa and the farming towns and villages - many of them now lost to super-farms - that surrounded it.
